Sciacca: city of ceramic

Sciacca, together with Caltagirone and Santo Stefano di Camastra, is one of the major centres of ceramic production in Sicily. Local craftsmen have created objects that are useful for decorating the home, to make the home more welcoming or perfect as gift ideas. An idea to decorate the home with a touch of elegance and colour or a unique gift idea.

The origin of Saccuan ceramics dates back to antiquity, when kilns for firing clay were found, to more recent evidence dating back to 1282, where it is certain that the palaces of the nobles of Gela and Agrigento furnished their rooms with Saccuan ceramics.

Not only furnishing objects, but Sciacca ceramics played a fundamental role in the construction of important Sicilian monuments and churches, such as the Cathedral of Morreale decorated with the bricks of master Lombrado (1498) or the Church of S. Margherita in Sciacca that was embellished with the work of masters Scoma and Francavilla (1496). Following the destruction of the majolica floor, of which no trace remains, a reproduction was made, which some ceramists believe to have been executed incorrectly.
