For the lovers of ancient history, Sicily represents a veritable treasure chest full of places to explore and monuments to admire in order to immerse oneself in the past.
Staying in Sciacca, even in this case, represents a real fortune.
In fact, just a few kilometres from the town are two of the most important archaeological sites in Europe: the Selinunte Archaeological Park and the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento.
Selinunte Archeological Park
Only 30 minutes by car from Sciacca is the Selinunte Archaeological Park, which, with the ruins of the seven mammoth Doric stone temples, the Necropolis, the Cusa quarries and the sanctuaries, represents the largest archaeological area in Europe to date.
This immense archaeological area, which attracts tourists and scholars from all over the world, tells the story of one of the largest Western Greek colonies ever, and walking among the remains of what was once one of the Mediterranean’s most flourishing classical civilisations will take you on a journey into the past, savouring the beauty of a Sicily gone by, the signs of which, however, remain indelible.
The Valley of the Temples in Agrigento.
The Valley of the Temples Park in Agrigento, located about an hour’s drive from Sciacca, encompasses an invaluable monumental and landscape heritage of what was once the ancient city of Akragas founded in 580 BC.
The Valley of the Temples was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 and is home to one of the largest archaeological sites in the Mediterranean, set in a beautiful natural landscape.
The park contains a multitude of monuments: temples, necropolises, tombs, a gymnasium, a theatre and much more, including the fascinating Temple of Concord, which has become popular for being one of the best-preserved temples of Greek antiquity.
